Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics: The misapplication of statistics in everyday life

Statistics play an influential role in persuading public opinion on issues ranging from birth control to terrorism. However, sometimes these so-called statistical calculations and discoveries need to be taken with a grain of salt. This lecture will examine the application of statistics in American media and give examples of where statistics has been grossly misused. Talithia Williams, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the Mathematics department at Harvey Mudd College. Formerly with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA Johnson Space Science Center, she has also spent time researching with the National Security Agency. Recent research on modeling cataract surgical rates in Africa is leading to a more effective means of deploying resources to eliminate blindness deriving from the disease.

Bedrijven beïnvloeden wetenschappelijk onderzoek significant,
zelfs het wetenschappelijk onderwijs

Beste mensen,

Het spreekwoord ‘’wiens woord men spreekt, wiens brood men eet’’ is helaas te vaak waar.

[Link].

groot.

[Link]

The Human Body-Life Story

The Human Body documentary is the sort of televisual undertaking that continues to justify the BBC licence fee. Presented by Robert Winston, it takes us on a journey from birth to death using time-lapse photography, computer graphics and various state-of-the-art imaging techniques to explore every aspect, every nook and crevice of the human body in its various stages of growth, maturity and eventual decay. Conception, toddlerhood, the awkward growing pains of adolescence, the incredibly complex workings of the brain (which burns up more energy than any other part of the human body, viewers of daytime TV included, apparently) and finally death are vividly depicted and explained. Winston's lucid, avuncular tones make The Human Body accessible to an intelligent 10-year-old and ages upward, though the more squeamish viewer might baulk at scenes of food being digested, or childbirth in all its inevitable messiness. Statistics abound--the average human will eat for three-and-a-half years during his or her lifetime, eat 160kg of chocolate and spend six months on the toilet. Though heart-warming in that it shows the commonality of human experience, The Human Body is also a potentially depressing reminder of our frail physicality and mortality. However, the most moving programme here features Herbie, a cancer victim who, in agreeing to have his last moments filmed as he lies dying in a hospice, has perhaps achieved a deserved immortality through this programme.

Quest for the Higgs

In 1999 my father Martinus Veltman won the Nobel Prize in physics and quite quickly it became apparent that I had no idea for what. In fact, it's fair to say that barely anyone today knows much about the present forefront of physics. This was not always the case. There was a great celebration and basic public understanding of physics in the early 20th century. The celebrity of Einstein and his theory relativity, the discoveries of the structure of the atom and of course the atomic bomb. The general public knew to some extent the idea of fusion, a nucleus surrounded by electrons, etc.. But since then, the last 60 plus years of discovery has gone into a realm of mystery. Quarks, Leptons, Higgs, Quantum Mechanics, Weak Force, Gauge Theory, and the list of mysterious terms goes on and on. However, my dad believed that we are at a point where the picture of particle physics has gotten quite clear and can be explained to the layman... me! We decided to make an educational film and the task of writing it fell upon me.

What followed was two years of intense learning. Reading one layman book after another and asking my dad numerous questions. Of particular help was in fact my dad's book "Fact and Mysteries of Particle Physics." A complex book but it is all there without crazy mathematical formulas. The Eureka moment of how to explain Particle Physics came with the book QED by Richard Feynman. In the foreword he explains that he was asked by a friend to explain Quantum Mechanics. He said he would only if they accept everything he says as truth and not question him. If you do that, and stick with it, it will make sense once you get the whole picture. The problem with Quantum Mechanics is that you have a knee jerk reaction to it that says it's wrong. It is not wrong but simply a different way of thinking. Just show everything the way it really is (however complex you think it is) and sure enough, people get it. All these other layman books fear people are too stupid and can't understand so they muddle everything with stupid patronizing analogies. Analogies have their place but a Quark is not an orange, it's a Quark.

Eventually I scripted a 9 chapter educational film. We start with the basic structure of the atom and from there we go into the world of creating particles, Quantum Mechanics and piecing together the Standard model. The conclusion would be the explanation of the Higgs particle and the current hunt for it. The hope would be that people could see this film and be able to understand and get quite excited when they read the headline: 'The Higgs has been discovered'. I would have to say that it is the Physics Community responsibility to explain to the public at large just what they are doing. Unfortunately most don't get that and we had a terrible time getting any sort of funding. My dad and me decided to make the first chapter of our educational film ourselves. We wanted to illustrate that Particle Physics can be taught and explained to the laymen. The key to explaining Particle Physics and the world of Quantum Mechanics is to simply show everything WITHOUT PATRONIZING ANALOGIES. In other words, dont underestimate the intelligence of your audience.

After years of trying to sell this educational film (and yes, we tried PBS numerous times), we got nowhere even though everyone we showed it to 'got it' and wanted to see more. But, to no avail. I finally decided to put it up on YouTube and over time just more and more people started watching it. It's taken my dad and me by surprise. I cannot describe just how excited I am when I see comments saying, "I finally get it". Thanks to YouTube though it shows that there is a thirst for knowledge and a market for educational films. Unfortunately, I don't know how to translate that into making more. People want more and we would love to but there's no funding. If you do know of some way to get more funding, please don't hesitate to contact me. At the very least support our sponsors. We would love to continue the movie.

The Religion of Science? - David Sloan Wilson

Evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson presents the notion of science as a religion. "Science is just like a religion, but its god is the truth." The Forum's year-long exploration of religion launches with a program featuring distinguished philosopher and cognitive scientist Daniel Dennett and noted evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson. They are joined by additional participants to discuss questions such as: What is the nature and purpose of religion? Is it a product of our evolution and something we can now do without? Is it a system of belief and practice that humans require in order to build communities and construct meaning for their lives? What in human make-up renders religion possible? How has religious belief developed and changed over the years, and how does it continue to do so? - CUNY  David Sloan Wilson uses evolutionary theory to explain all aspects of humanity in addition to the rest of life, as he recounts for a general audience in Evolution for Everyone: How Darwin's Theory Can Change the Way We Think About Our Lives (Bantam 2007). He is a distinguished professor of biology and anthropology at Binghamton University, part of the State University of New York. He publishes in anthropology, psychology, and philosophy journals in addition to his mainstream biological research. His academic books include Unto Others: The Evolution and Psychology of Unselfish Behavior (with Elliott Sober, Harvard 1998), Darwin's Cathedral: Evolution, Religion, and the Nature of Society (Chicago, 2002), and The Literary Animal: Evolution and the Nature of Narrative (co-edited with Jonathan Gottschall, Northwestern 2005). Wilson also directs EvoS, a campus-wide program that uses evolutionary theory as a common language for the unification of knowledge.

TV - Holland Doc: Higgs

Wetenschap is kinderspel
