Fish Oil: How Much Should I Take Each Day? - Dr. Shannon

Fish oil and your health: What are fish oil's true benefits?

Much has been written about the benefits of fish oil and and whether it can help prevent heart disease. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology looked at a range of studies involving tens of thousands of patients over a time span of 30 years. "This isn't just hype; we now have tremendous and compelling evidence that demonstrates the protective benefits of fish oil in multiple aspects of preventive cardiology," Dr. Carl Lavie, an author of the study, writes. Although eating fatty fish is the preferred method of getting the recommended dose of fish oil, supplements, in consultation with a physician, could also be a source.

Omega-3 doubly good for female brain power, but omega-6 makes girls dimmer

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, are twice as effective in improving test scores for girls as boys, U.S. researchers have found. While this appears to confirm the theory that fish is brain food, the researchers also found that omega-6, found primarily in rapeseed, sunflower, palm, and soy oils, diminishes the power of the brain.

Review backs antidepressant effects of omega-3s

The results of a major review of published research that examined the relationship between depression and level of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet suggest that omega-3 fatty acids have antidepressant effects. However, the researchers point out that the quality of the studies means it's still too soon to say definitively that omega-3s can treat depression or bipolar disorder.

Wake Forest researchers say popular fish contains potentially dangerous fatty acid combination

Farm-raised tilapia, one of the most highly consumed fish in America, has very low levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, according to new research from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The researchers say the combination could be a potentially dangerous food source for some patients with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other allergic and auto-immune diseases that are particularly vulnerable to an "exaggerated inflammatory response." Inflammation is known to cause damage to blood vessels, the heart, lung and joint tissues, skin, and the digestive tract. "In the United States, tilapia has shown the biggest gains in popularity among seafood, and this trend is expected to continue as consumption is projected to increase from 1.5 million tons in 2003 to 2.5 million tons by 2010," write the Wake Forest researchers in an article published this month in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. They say their research revealed that farm-raised tilapia, as well as farmed catfish, "have several fatty acid characteristics that would generally be considered by the scientific community as detrimental." Tilapia has higher levels of potentially detrimental long-chain omega-6 fatty acids than 80-percent-lean hamburger, doughnuts and even pork bacon, the article says.

Scientists suspect omega-3 fatty acids could slow acute wound healing

A recent study shows that popular fish oil supplements have an effect on the healing process of small, acute wounds in human skin. But whether that effect is detrimental, as researchers initially suspected, remains a mystery. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils are widely considered to benefit cardiovascular health and other diseases related to chronic inflammation because of their anti-inflammatory properties. But insufficient inflammation during the initial stage of wound healing may delay the advancement of later stages.

Utah Diabetes Center Studying Whether Omega-3 Fatty Acid Can Prevent Type 1 Diabetes in Newborn Babies

The Utah Diabetes Center at University Health Care is screening pregnant women in their third trimester and infants up to 5 months old for a study testing whether an omega-3 fatty acid found in some foods can prevent Type 1 diabetes. The Utah Diabetes Center is one of nine centers nationwide participating in the Nutritional Intervention to Prevent Type 1 Diabetes Pilot Trial, or NIP for short. The goal is to intervene in the disease process before it begins in those babies most likely to acquire Type 1 diabetes later in life. Babies in utero and up to 5 months old whose mother, father, brother, sister, half-sister or half-brother has Type 1 diabetes are eligible for the study. Screening consists of a simple blood test. Babies who qualify will receive free testing and medical monitoring by diabetes researchers.

A little wine boosts omega-3 in the body - Researchers find a novel mechanism for a healthier heart

Moderate alcohol intake is associated with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in plasma and red blood cells. This is the major finding of the European study IMMIDIET that will be published in the January issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, an official publication of the American Society for Nutrition and is already available on line (www.ajcn.org ). The study suggests that wine does better than other alcoholic drinks. This effect could be ascribed to compounds other than alcohol itself, representing a key to understand the mechanism lying behind the heart protection observed in moderate wine drinkers. The IMMIDIET study examined 1,604 citizens from three geographical areas - south-west London in England, Limburg in Belgium and Abruzzo in Italy. Thanks to a close cooperation with General Practitioners of these areas, all participants underwent a comprehensive medical examination, including a one year recall food frequency questionnaire to assess their dietary intake, alcohol consumption included. Omega-3 fatty acids, mainly derived from fish, are considered as protective against coronary heart disease and sudden cardiac death, thus their high blood concentration is definitely good for our health.
